Helping Books Logo Helping caring adults to find quality children's literature

SCOPE AND FUNCTION

Helping Books Connection provides a book review database, created by librarians and educators, including titles for ages birth-18. Its purpose is to assist caring adults in finding and using quality children's literature about ethical and social issues, character education, values, and personal and family issues relevant to young people. Two primary concepts that promote discussion are used in selecting titles for this database. They are Character Education and Bibliotherapy.

Character Education is the process of identifying positive values, as defined by a community, then assisting young people to learn and use these values as tools to make positive, ethical choices in their everyday lives.

Bibliotherapy is the therapeutic use of reading materials for help in solving personal problems.

See the Helping Books Resources section of this website for online resources on bibliotherapy, character education, family book discussions, and storytelling, plus books on these topics.
