Search Tips
GENERAL SEARCH TIPS
- Capitalization is not necessary when keying in terms.
- Punctuation must be included when keying in terms. Make sure apostrophes,
colons, commas are included or you will not get any results.
- Spacing is not important when keying in terms.
- Spelling must be accurate to receive results.
AUTHOR SEARCHES
- Key in the author’s last name, comma, first name.
KEYWORD SEARCHES (“Quick search”)
- You may key in multiple keywords into this search box from any
field in the database (author, illustrator, title, publisher, review, intended
audience).
- Do NOT include Boolean search terms “and,” “or,” “not”
between words.
- Punctuation between terms is not necessary.
- Punctuation within a term (e.g. apostrophe) is required to receive results.
INTENDED AUDIENCE SEARCH
- Add search term or keyword followed by your intended audience

SUBJECT SEARCHES
Scope note: The subject terms in the Literature Database were chosen to depict common psychological, physical, and social issues that a child may experience. These issues, in turn often provide the conflicts with which a child must cope. These terms are grouped in eight major subject headings, with their subheadings listed beneath:
- CHARACTER TRAITS—Terms related to positive traits that a child may be encouraged to develop and nurture to become a healthy, autonomous adult (e.g.: Fairness, Honesty, Loyalty).
- COMMUNITY—Terms related to the social structures a child may encounter outside his or her immediate family environment (e.g.: School, Country, Religion)
- FAMILY—Terms related to the child’s home environment and his or her caretakers. Both traditional and non-traditional family terms are included. (e.g.: Father, Mother, Lesbian/Gay, Adopted).
- FEELINGS—Terms related to the spectrum of emotions a child may experience in the course of everyday life (e.g.: Anger, Confidence, Love, Sadness).
- LIFE EVENTS—Terms related to the main occurrences to which most children are exposed during a lifetime (e.g.: Birth, Change, Death, Illness).
- SOCIAL ACTIVITIES—Terms related to positive systems of behavior incorporating individual “CHARACTER TRAITS” (e.g.: Citizenship, Community Service, Moral Reasoning).
- SOCIAL EVENTS—Terms related to routine activities in a child’s life that may create conflict and issues (e.g.: Doctors, Sports, Travel).
- SOCIAL ISSUES—Terms related to challenges that arise from dealing with conflicts in society (e.g.: Abuse, Adoption, Gangs, Homelessness).

TITLE SEARCHES
- Terms in the title must be keyed into the search in the correct order.
- You may truncate (shorten) a title and receive results.
